Former Day Care in Detroit's North Corktown to Become Cafe and Food Hall

January 20, 2025, 9:05 AM by  Allan Lengel

It was once a five-and-dime store, and then a day care. Then it was left abandoned for more than 15 years, blighted and adorned with graffiti.

Now, the building at 3388 14th St., just south of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, in Detroit's North Corktown neighborhood, is slated to become a café and food hall, reports JC Reindl of the Detroit Free Press.

North Corktown resident Will McDowell, a member of the North Corktown Neighborhood Association,  purchased the building in spring 2023 for $14,000, the Freep reports.

Part of the plan includes the possibility of renting out the building's kitchens to small local food businesses. The cafe could be similar to The Congregation on Rosa Parks Blvd. that serves food, coffee and cocktails, the Freep reports.

The building is less than a mile from what used to be The 20 Grand, one of Detroit's most famous night clubs that hosted entertainers including the Supremes, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. Mick Jagger first saw B.B. King perform there.

It opened in the 1950s and closed in 1976.
